Rabbits

Home > Animals > Rabbits

Even before moving to High Meadows Farm the family kept rabbits. Initially they were pets. The first rabbits were Angora rabbits - known for their very long and soft fur. They were great for petting but needed some brushing to keep their long fur from getting matted. The first three rabbits were named "Duffy", "Fluffy", and "Muffy". Duffy was, of course, the male rabbit. They had lots of offspring that usually ended up in the stew pet. Duffy, Fluffy, and Muffy, however, were pets to the end.

Once the move was made to High Meadows Farm rabbits were raised in earnest. Most never had names and made their way to the dinner table. At any given time one could find from ten to thirty rabbits on the farm. They were kept in the Barn or in the Rabbit House. While served at the dinner table most times Mom said the meal was 'chicken stew'.

The children would call them 'bunnies' while the parents referred to them as 'rabbits'. There were many times the rabbits would be let out of their cages to run free in the farm yard to the delight of the young children. In the photo above you can see the Rabbit House behind the children.
