A Small Family Farm in Maine
The High Meadows Farm in Maine was started in the early 1970s. The existing farmland and buildings had been the site of farming activities for over 150 years. High Meadows Farm was not a commercial enterprise but more of a hobby and retirement activity for the family. A variety of crops were grown to include hay, vegetables, berries, fruits, and more through the 1970s and into the next century.
Many types of animals resided on the farm during this period as well. Cows were raised for meat and milk. Sheep were kept for their meat and wool. Goats for their milk, chickens for the eggs, and rabbits for the stew. Over the course of three decades almost every type of animal could be found to include ducks, pigs, and others.
For many years the farm was completely self-sufficient except for items like salt, pepper, and flour. There were two big freezers in the farmhouse basement for storing meat and vegetables. In addition, shelves were stocked with jams and other preserves.
