High Meadows Farm

Vegetable Garden

Home > Activities > Vegetable Garden

In the earlier days there was almost always a vegetable garden. The vegetable garden provided all sorts of produce for the dinner table ranging from carrots, corn, peas, beans, peppers, squash, pumpkins, and watermellons. Much of the vegetables would be jarred or frozen for use during the entire year. For the first few years the vegetable garden was located at the rear of the barn in the lower hayfield; the manure from the farm animals was in easy reach. In later years the vegetable garden was planted behind the farmhouse in the back pasture.

Garden 2015

to the right is where the cows would drink their water. The cows
have been gone for over fifteen years but the tub remains.

The farm garden has been located in a few different spots over the years. This one from the 1970s was located in the lower pasture just below the barn.

Apple Tree - High Meadows Farm 2015

There are several apple trees on the farm. Some were planted in the 1970s. Many were planted more than a century ago. The photo above is of an apple tree that is likely about 50 years old. (photo taken in 2015).
